A McCleary Solution

House Bill 2242 is a Win for Washington Students

The Campaign for Student Success applauds the McCleary solution passed by the Washington state Legislature. By approving nearly $1 billion in targeted funding for student-centered programs including the Learning Assistance Program, requiring a new High-Poverty LAP allocation in basic education that requires dollars be delivered to the schools in need, directing dollars to Career and Technical Education, eliminating the staff mix factor, and putting significant money into K-12 education to remove structural inequity, Washington state legislators have shown that they have heard our campaign’s priorities and are committed to putting Washington students first.

This is a proud day for our students, parents, coalition and community members that have made up the Campaign for Student Success. Together, we fought hard for a solution that gives EVERY Washington student access to a great education. We thank the legislators that worked alongside us to bring forth this true policy reform and the opportunity to make a huge positive impact on the lives of Washington’s kids.

The Campaign for Student Success launched in January with a singular goal: Seize the McCleary moment as an opportunity to do more than just fund the system, but instead put kids first. Over the last 6 months, the coalition has grown to more than 40 organizations committed to this mantra. Together, the coalition released a set of strategic priorities that are now reflected in this solution to McCleary, House Bill 2242, passed today by the legislature, and drove a comprehensive campaign to educate both legislators and the public about what an equitable public education system that benefits every student could look like for Washington. Today marks a huge victory in that effort.
